Illustrious Sir C. E. Newton
Potentate - 1962
“Our motto,” said Potentate C. E. “Chuck” Newton, Jr., “is Fun for you in ’62… Our goal is ‘Bring two in ’62.’”
Thus, a very active year got underway in 1962, with eleven Nobility dances, six Chuck-O-Luck (bingo) parties, International dance classes, and special entertainment. At each Nobility dance, a gift was awarded to a typical couple selected by the judges.
Governor of Texas, Noble Price Daniel, and Mayor of Houston, Noble Lewis Cutrer, joined with Potentate Chuck Newton and the Divan in welcoming Imperial Potentate Marshall M. Porter, a Justice of the Supreme Court in Alberta, Canada, when he officially visited Arabia Temple in March. The Imperial Sir was the guest of honor at the Crippled Children’s Pageant and also visited the children at the Clinic.
Arabia Temple’s first annual Easter Sunrise Service was held at the Executive Club at 5:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 22nd. Breakfast at the club followed the services. A train trip to Amarillo aboard the Santa Fe’s El Capitan in May took the Uniformed Units, Nobles, and ladies for the All-State meetings.
Past Imperial Potentate Galloway Calhoun of Karem Temple in Waco passed away on April 16th.
The Potentate, representatives, the Divan, a number of Nobles, and ladies attended the Imperial meetings in Toronto, Canada during July. Noble George M. Klepper of Al Chymia Temple in Memphis, Tennessee was elected Imperial Potentate. Both ceremonials this year had good classes, but an exceptionally large number of demits and deaths prevented any large gain in membership.
This year’s Circus was billed as “Entirely New in ’62” and featured TV stars from the Bonanza show, Sky King and Penny, and a Wild West show featuring members of the Arabian Knights.
Christmas came right on schedule for the children at the Clinic and Chuck Newton’s very good year closed with the New Year’s Eve Ball that attracted over 500 Nobles and ladies.
