Potentate - 1974


Carlos T. Knight became the 60th Potentate of Arabia Temple.


His theme:

“More in ’74.”


The Inaugural Ball at the Astroworld Hotel was the largest in Temple history.


Plans began for the 56th Annual Crippled Children’s Benefit, again featuring Astrodome preseason baseball games.


At a special meeting on March 23rd, the membership unanimously approved financing and layout plans for the new Mosque construction, scheduled to begin that summer.


Imperial Potentate Jacob A. Wingerter visited on March 24th.


The benefit Astros games (March 29 – April 3) were very successful.


The Temple Picnic on April 28th attracted large numbers of Nobles and families.


A Temple trip to Rio de Janeiro occurred in May.


The All-The-Way-In-One-Day reunion at the Scottish Rite Temple on May 18th initiated 149 new Nobles.


At All-State in Austin:


  • Motor Corps Escort – 1st place

  • Provost Guard – two 2nd place trophies

  • Band – 3rd place


At the Imperial Council in Atlantic City:


  • Patrol – 1st place competition, 2nd place parade

  • Sam Morrow – #1 Clown in North America (second consecutive year)


Jack M. Streight of Gizah Temple in Vancouver was elected Imperial Potentate.


A new NASA Area Shrine Club at Clear Lake was chartered on June 19th.


Construction of the new Temple building began June 26th with completion planned for summer 1975.


Arabia mourned the death of Past Potentate C. Howard Phifer (Potentate 1958).


At the Masonic Happening on December 7th, the goal of 444 new Nobles in ’74 was achieved.

A total of 479 new Nobles joined Arabia Temple in 1974.
