Illustrious Sir Harry B. Jewett, Sr.
Potentate - 1938
With the finances of the Temple improving Potentate Harry B. Jewett stated, “We shall begin the year to adequately entertain the membership.” A Valentine Dance on February 14 ushered in renewed Temple activity and vigor. Arabia Temple was on the move again. A week later, on February 22, the annual Crippled Children’s Ball netted more than $22,000, a new record high for this most important project.
Improvements were made in the various club rooms and the pool room of the Temple. The units were all regaining full strength again; the bowling alleys were becoming more popular; and the unit golfers announced a tournament at the Houston Country Club in April. A top-notch boxing card was held at the Olympia Boxing Arena on March 14 (the admission was a 1938 dues card).
The Spring ceremonial was held in May at Galveston in conjunction with the Texas All-State meeting. Thirty-nine novices crossed the hot sands. Arabia Patrol retained first place in their competitive drill when the unit competitions among the Texas Temples were held.
In June, Potentate Jewett arranged a trip for the membership to the Imperial meetings in Los Angeles, California, via air-conditioned Southern Pacific railroad cars with a private car for the Divan and Representative. Round-trip fare was $55.40. Many Arabia Nobles and their ladies made this trip.
