Illustrious Sir Trieves W. Lopp

Potentate - 1960

“Let’s all work together for a SPARKLING 60” was the theme expressed by Illustrious Potentate Trieves W. Lopp on the 45th Anniversary of Arabia Temple in 1960. The Temple calendar indicated a full range of activities for entertaining the Nobility. Construction of the new Mosque was held in abeyance pending the sale of the Main Street property. Officers of all the Shrine Clubs met with the Potentate in February to discuss three Temple projects – membership, Crippled Children’s Benefit, and the Circus. “A Youth Extravaganza, beautiful and elaborate,” described the Crippled Children’s Pageant held in March at the Coliseum and which was rated one of the best in years.

Imperial Potentate and Mrs. Clayton F. Andrews were honored at a banquet for the Imperial Sir’s official visit in March. Being a doctor from Lincoln, Nebraska, he visited with the children at the Clinic and was favorably impressed with the facilities at the Houston Crippled Children’s Clinic.

Austin, Texas was the scene of the All-State meetings and for the first time, the Artisans became a marching unit. The Drum and Bugle Corps brought home the first-place trophy. Noble George A. Mattison, Jr. was elected Imperial Potentate at the Imperial sessions in Denver, and his son, Arabia’s Noble William E. Mattison, was appointed Imperial Potentate’s Aide. Potentate Lopp, the representatives, a group of Past Potentates, Nobles, and ladies represented Arabia Temple.

The “Better Than Ever” Circus in November, featuring 30 stupendous acts, including the Manhattan Rockets, proved to be another very successful Arabia Shrine Circus. A Cold Sands Ceremonial in September and the Fall Ceremonial in December raised the total membership in excess of 8700 members. The Christmas Party for the children was held and Arabia’s 45th Anniversary year closed with a gala Costume Ball on New Year’s Eve.
