Illustrious Sir W. L. Childs

Potentate - 1928

New ideas and enthusiasms were the order of the day during Potentate W. L. Childs’ term. On January 28, 1928, the Temple voted to purchase the Houston Turnverein Building, located at Prairie and Austin Streets, as the future Mosque of Arabia Temple.

Potentate Childs installed the budget system to guide the finance committee in handling the business affairs of the Temple. It was also his idea to hold a Mothers’ Day service at the Temple.

The uniformed units were taken to the Imperial meetings in Miami, Florida where Arabia Temple’s own Past Potentate Frank C. Jones was installed as Imperial Potentate of the Shrine of North America. Potentate Childs and the units staged a show in honor of Imperial Sir Jones that the Imperial Council declared, “that they had never before witnessed anything like it.”

Membership continued to increase and was now 4,210.
