The grills are hot, the teams are fired up, and the good times are already rolling at Good Times Marina.

Yesterday, the Arabian Knights BBQ Cookoff Benefit got off to a strong start with margaritas, chicken, and fajitas judged, along with plenty of fun, laughter, and fellowship. It was the kind of opening day that reminds everyone why community events like this matter. People showed up to cook, compete, volunteer, judge, cheer, and support a cause bigger than the weekend itself.

Now the celebration continues with another great day of barbecue, music, cars, and awards, all in support of Shriners Children’s Texas.

A strong start with food, fellowship, and friendly competition

Friday set the tone for the weekend in the best possible way. The cookoff opened with crowd favorites and serious judging, including margaritas, chicken, and fajitas. Those categories always bring out personality, skill, and a little friendly rivalry.

A good cookoff is about more than the final score. It is the smell of smoke in the air. It is neighbors stopping by to visit. It is volunteers keeping things moving behind the scenes. It is judges taking their time, cook teams checking their entries, and supporters enjoying the moment.

That spirit was on full display as the benefit began. The first day brought together the ingredients that make this event special:

  • Cook teams putting time, skill, and pride into every entry

  • Judges helping keep the competition fair and fun

  • Volunteers handling the details most people never see

  • Supporters showing up for the cause and the community

  • Friends and families enjoying a day by the water

The result was a great opening day and a strong lead-in to today’s festivities.

Today brings cars, live music, awards, and more barbecue

The event continues today at Good Times Marina, located at 11906 7th 1/2 Street, Houston, TX 77044. Whether someone is coming for the cook teams, the car show, the live music, or simply to enjoy the day, there is plenty happening.

Here is the schedule for today:

Cookers’ Awards

The car show begins at 2:00 p.m., giving visitors a chance to check out vehicles, visit with owners, and enjoy another layer of the day’s festivities. It pairs perfectly with a cookoff atmosphere, where people can wander, visit, grab food, and take in the scene.

From 2:00 to 5:30 p.m., Ricky Johnson will perform live, bringing music to the waterfront setting. Live music adds the kind of energy that turns a good event into a memorable one. It gives people a reason to stay, relax, and enjoy the company around them.

Then, at 6:00 p.m., the cook teams get their moment during the Cookers’ Awards. After all the prep, smoke, seasoning, tasting, and judging, awards time brings excitement and celebration. Every team contributes to the event, and the awards give everyone a chance to honor the effort that went into the weekend.

The heart of the event is the cause

Food and fun may bring people through the gate, but the purpose gives the day its meaning. This benefit helps support Shriners Children’s Texas, a name many families know for pediatric specialty care and support for children.

Community fundraisers work because they turn generosity into something people can share together. A cookoff does that naturally. People bring their time, talent, equipment, recipes, and energy. Others bring encouragement, donations, attendance, and word-of-mouth support.

Together, that creates real momentum.

The Arabian Knights BBQ Cookoff Benefit is a reminder that support does not have to feel formal or distant. Sometimes it looks like smoke rolling off a pit. Sometimes it sounds like live music by the water. Sometimes it feels like a handshake, a laugh, a cold drink, and a group of people saying yes to helping children and families.

That is what makes this event worth supporting.

Gratitude belongs to everyone making it happen

Events like this do not come together by accident. They take planning, early mornings, long hours, and people willing to jump in wherever needed.

A big thank-you goes to the cook teams who bring the flavor and the competition. They are the center of the cookoff experience, and their hard work gives everyone something to gather around.

Thanks also go to the judges, who lend their time and attention to each category. Judging a cookoff takes focus, fairness, and respect for the work behind every entry.

The volunteers deserve just as much appreciation. They help keep the event moving, answer questions, support logistics, and handle the countless small tasks that make a big day possible.

And of course, thank you to every supporter who shows up, brings a friend, cheers on the cook teams, and helps lift up the mission behind the event.

Come out, cheer them on, and bring a friend

There is still time to be part of the fun. Head out to Good Times Marina today, enjoy the cookoff atmosphere, check out the car show, listen to Ricky Johnson, and stick around for the Cookers’ Awards at 6:00 p.m.

Bring a friend. Cheer for the teams. Enjoy the fellowship. Support a meaningful cause.

The grills are going, the schedule is full, and the welcome is wide open.

Get in where you fit in, and be part of a great day for Shriners Children’s Texas.
